Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a type of Animal Assisted Therapy involving a client, a qualified mental health practitioner and a carefully selected herd of horses. Horses act as co-facilitators that support clients throughout their sessions. Clients are offered safe experiences with the horses for the purpose of exploring relational patterns and behaviours as well as developing a greater awareness of themselves, others and the environment. EAP can support children, adolescents and adults to meet their therapeutic needs. No horse experience is required.
Horses are ever present, non judgmental, curious and accepting of everyone. They are sensitive and attuned to our non-verbal communications and energy. Due to their beauty, size, power and unique personalities, horses can evoke strong emotions, behaviours and thoughts in people, who are invited to explore these in their sessions. Horses are relational beings that live in constant connection with each other, much like people. Horses model behaviour that is crucial to human well-being including awareness, embodiment, clear communication, emotional regulation and solid boundaries.
